September 1922
Tom and I decided to leave our
house in light of recent events in and around the area. A good friend of mine,
Jay Gatsby, died the other day after being shot by a man who accused him of
killing his wife with a car. For unexplainable reasons, I feel like it was my
fault that he was killed. I could not stand to attend the funeral the other day because of my feeling of unexplainable guilt. He tried to make me feel happy and comfortable. No one else has ever tried as hard as him to impress me. I will miss him!
July 1922
I cannot believe it! Jay Gatsby
lives across the bay from me and next door to Nick. What a coincidence! I never
knew that I’d ever see him again. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen
him. He still has his charm, but seems a little different than he used to with
his large mansion. He is now a successful man and likely richer that Tom...
June 1922
As I have feared for a while, Tom has another
female that he sometimes visits. I do not know who the woman is because Tom, of
course, tries to hide this secret from me. He has been in a similar situation
before, but that was before we moved to New York. I greatly dislike that he
spends so much time away from home, which I presume he spends with this other
woman. The other day he was gone for the entire afternoon. At least Jordan, who
visits sometimes, keeps me company.
May 1922
A relative of mine, Nick, came to
visit the other day. He lives across the bay from Tom and me. It was
excruciatingly hot when he visited. A friend of mine, Jordan, was also visiting at the time. I
might add that she and Nick would make a perfect couple. But that is beside the
point… We all had a wonderful time together, except during Tom’s absence on the
phone…
April 1920
Our child Pammy was just born the
other day. I only can hope that she grows up to be a fool. It seems like being
a fool is the route to take as a female in society in order to be successful. Not many women are successful by themselves. Of course, Jordan is an exception. Luckily,
I’ve hired a nurse to take care of the child as she grows and matures. The nurse can
be the one to deal with the foolishness.
June 1919
Tom and I are now married! I was a little
hesitant the night before the wedding, but looking back I realize the wedding
was just perfect. He had a hundred people come down from Chicago in four
private cars and bought a whole floor of the Seelbach Hotel. He also bought me
a string of pearls that is worth three hundred and fifty thousand dollars! This
is proof that he does love me.
After the wedding, we went on a three-month honeymoon to the
South Seas. There we enjoyed the beauty of the waters and beaches. We got to
relax and play games while on the honeymoon. I also returned with some
souvenirs, none of which are cheap.
March 1919
I have met a man named Tom
Buchanan. He comes from a rich family and has inherited his family’s wealth. We
spent time together the other night going to various clubs and stores. He
bought me a collection of fancy items that I cannot help but adore. They are
just perfect.
September 1918
Gatsby, where are you? It has
been months since your departure to the war and yet I have heard nothing from
you. Every day I wake up early, worried that you may have been killed, hurt, or
captured. The war is about to end, however. I am beginning to grow impatient
and have had to find a job that supports me. I will be awaiting your return or
letter explaining when you will return.
February 1918
Jay has just told me that he is going to
war. I am so scared that he will not return safely or even at all. He tried to
reassure me and promise that he will return safely and quickly, however, I am
still unsure if he will be safe. The newspapers throughout the country often
contain dreadful news headlines concerning the war. Many are dying and all I
can do is pray and hope that Jay will fulfill his promise.
October 1917
Jay Gatsby! Those are the only words that I can
process in my head. I have never met a
man in my life like him. He is so joyful and flattering. It is unfortunate that he does not have much money, but I can look past that because he is so charming. I only pray that he is
not asked to serve in the war because I don’t know how I’d live without him
during his absence.
